Yazid is a Master’s student at Drexel University, pursuing a degree in Public Health. In his essay, Yazid wrote of growing up in the long-running political conflict in Palestine. From a young age, he became involved in his community, volunteering with Save the Children. He worked as a clinical researcher in his undergraduate studies, and covered “sickle cell disease, microbiology, and epigenetics,”. He is passionate about the intersection between social justice and healthcare, and is currently working on an ebook titled, “Applications and Spatial Analysis using R: Environmental and Health Science,”.

Yazid is starting his Master’s this fall, with a focus on epidemiology. Once completed, he hopes to return to Palestine and set up mental health centers focused on trauma-informed care. “My goal is to return to Palestine and utilize epidemiological methods while working in higher education to research conflict as a social determinant of health,” he wrote.

 “I am grateful to be selected as a finalist for the MPOWER Global Citizen Scholarship. It will allow me to achieve my career goals. This unconditional support will permit me to become a globally engaged individual who will contribute positively to global health,” he said. “This initiative from MPOWER Financing displays their commitment toward aiding international students in pursuing their educational aspirations.”

Xuxu is a Ph.D. candidate at the Baylor College of Medicine from China. After completing her medical degree in China, she found her passion in translational research. Her research interests are focused on metastatic cancer and estrogen receptor (ESR1) gene fusions. 

Our committee was greatly impressed with her achievements. In her application essay, Xuxu wrote, “I have established a diagnostic gene signature to separate inactive ESR1 fusions from active ‘drivers’, and I identified new kinase targets for potential treatment for patients that express active ESR1 fusions,”. She is a strong advocate for other women in STEM, and hopes to, “accelerate the application of precision therapeutics to improve clinical outcomes for patients with metastatic cancer,”. 

“I am extremely honored and grateful to be one of the winners for the MPOWER Women in STEM Scholarship. As an international student, scholarship opportunities are very limited,” she said. “This award will financially support my doctoral education and motivate me to continue pursuing my study in metastatic cancers and precision therapeutics with the goal to improve clinical outcomes of patients. I strive to provide an encouraging and supportive environment for women in STEM fields.”

Ore is a Master’s student at Yale University, pursuing a degree in Healthcare Management. He grew up in Nigeria, where he also earned a medical degree. During his medical studies, Ore researched a wide range of topics. In his essay, he discusses his work which spanned, “across several fields, including cancer, heart disease, mental health.” Ore is passionate about healthcare, specifically pediatric burn victims. This interest sparked due to a research paper, published in the Burns Journal, when he learned, “that childhood burn victims [in Nigeria] return to school much later than their peers in the U.S.A., with many of them dropping out altogether, mainly as a result of lack of access to quality, affordable burn care.”

After completing his Master’s, Ore hopes to begin a residency program in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He plans to establish a non-profit burn center in Nigeria to care for pediatric burn patients. In addition to his dedication to healthcare, Ore’s other passions include, “co-found[ing] a local agribusiness that provides poultry products to underserved areas at affordable prices while employing youth from the neighboring community.”

It is both comforting and reassuring that the committee resonated with my story and elected to be involved in my journey.” Ore said. “This award will serve as requisite financial support, as well as motivation necessary in the pursuit of my MPH degree in Healthcare Management at Yale University. My degree will empower me to make a significant impact in the lives of those who need it the most.
